[NI230] In the 1881 census William was still living with his parents at home in Godington as an un-employed gardener.
As he died in 1882, only a year later, he was clearly unwell and perhaps this he why he was still at home.

[NI237] Worked for Onley Savill Onley at Stisted Hall as well as building houses.

Onley Harvey (1795-1890) was the only son of Charles Onley, M.P. for Norwich and Recorder of that city. Later known as Onley Savill Onley, he inherited Stisted Hall, and devoted himself to modernising and embellishing the village and estate.

The following is an excerpt from a book "Small Beer" by Ursula Thompson. It
traces the history of Stisted from Elizabeth 1 to Elizabeth 11. It was
produced in 1967 but is no longer in print.

"Thomas Watts, a builder who came from Norwich in the 1830s, and later his
son John Lent Watts, did a great deal of work for Savill Onley, in the
Church, and in his new house, and also all over the village. It was Watts who
built the houses in the Street, with their decorated bargeboards and also
with their ornamental chimneys. These seem to have been Watts' speciality, and
they crop up all over the parish. They appear on some of the ancient
farmhouses, and sometimes on houses which are otherwise quite
undistinguished. They are easy to recognise by their "cobweb" design, as it
was called, and the square-stone plaque, which is invariably at the base,
with the initials O.S.O. and the date. It may be mentioned here that the
elder Watts was buried in the churchyard, and his tombstone is decorated with
two miniature chimneys of his habitual design."

Hope this will have been of interest with perhaps the fact that Thomas came
from Norwich being of use for researching earlier generations. Savill Onley
was the local Squire. This account suggests John Lent compared with Lent John.

Just also read in White's Commercial Directory 1848 (photocopy from E.R.C.)
Thomas Watts listed as bricklayer.
